Probably won’t work. The whole idea of fusing is to get the class to smooth out.
You could engrave the name then rub in either mica or enamel paint. Then fuse it.

Stained glass is very “iffy” as to color stability. It may work, it may not.
Also, a rule of thumb is that you should not mix sheets. Use only one sheet in a piece.
Last, your fusing schedule should be just as if it were regular fusable glass.

I have a tutorial on my web site (see below) about high fire fusing. One of the parts creates a pinfire opal look.

Try it before you discard the technique. I fuse decals all the time. I do not full fuse it though. the final fuse I will only go half way between tack and full fuse. This is to prevent movement of the glass breaking up the decal.

If you fire polish right, the edges will not round.
The grey scum of death that you refer to is probably due to not grinding the edge to a fine enough grit or not cleaning it well enough. Note: one way to prevent that is to use a devit agent on the edges. But always put the piece in water immediately after grinding and clean well.

Frit is very weakly pigmented. When you fuse the way you described the layer of color is quite thin. You need either Mica or very pigmented paints or enamels to get color to show well.

I’ve tumbled lots of pieces and no problem with breakage.
