No, it doesn’t fire differently and you are correct that the top element should be used for glass, not the side elements, as I recently learned from this site. I always used the side elements with my glass projects and never had problems with thermal shock…but apparently side elements can cause that problem. Bullseye Technote #5 helped me with this (Volume & Bubble Control). It has good diagrams and explains the process well. You could try to look it up on the internet; I got a technical Bullseye Book at my local glass company. You could dam the peices to keep them from spreading. Hope this helps.
