Is It Art Or Craft?
I love the comments here. Of course we are preaching to the Choir. In my school district only the choir, band and orchestra are called the FINE ARTS which drives this (Visual) Art teacher crazy!! We artists struggle with the silly labels fine arts or crafts to divide us into classes based on the media we use and the prices on our work. It seems many people think of crafts as 3-D work and fine art as flat work like painting. I feel the label crafts gets a bum rap to the point our district renamed Crafts as 3-D Design. The ironic thing is that those crafts like pottery, glasswork, jewelry, etc. all take more knowledge and expertise to produce. A painter works mostly with pure design elements and principles while a potter or glass artist needs a lot of scientfic knowledge of kilns, chemicals, COE and tools along with the design sense painters use. Sadly I don’t see alot of those design principles in some of the stuff peddled as fine art today. So it’s more about marketing than skill. Marketing creates those divisions between art and crafts and the ranks within each division. Real art comes from your heart and soul. It causes you to see the world differently and find ways to express that beauty in whatever media you use. Don’t let anyone belittle you for what media you use to create your art.
