Glass:
- Top temperature usually 1700 F (927 C)
- Most important elements are in the lid
- Controller is critical (or close to it)
- Always electric
Ceramic:
- Top temperature usually 2300 F (1260 C)
- No lid elements
- Controller optional
- Electric or gas
You can buy an electric kiln that does both – has the top temp of a ceramic kiln, has top elements, and has a controller. If you go this route make sure to use separate shelves for ceramic vs. glass firings.
