Check out “Wood Projects for the Home”, Ron Hildebrand, 1980, Ortho Books (yes, the poisonous chemical division of Chevron), pages 34-35 – Shoji Light (p 34 is a photo, p 35 the materials list and instructions). It is a free-standing 76.75T x 25W x 9.5D inch box with 2 fluorescent lights and a face of translucent plastic with a decorative grid. No way incorporated in the plan to change the bulbs or provide ventilation, but those would be easy fixes. The plan could be modified to turn it into a free-standing or wall-mounted shelving unit by
a) making the entire unit deeper,
b) routing a groove in or attaching strips to the sides to slide in the plastic (or a thin sheet of translucent white glass),
c) installing shelves – permanent or adjustable, wood or glass,
and, if hanging,
d) adding cleats on the back and wall (this is a very strong way to hang what could become a very heavy case).
Doors could also be added to keep out dust and prevent flying Nerf balls and curious kitties from wreaking havoc.

hmmm, I just may have to build one of these myself – scaled down to fit a particular spot in the house – I have all the materials except the translucent plastic or glass – what wood(s) to use? cherry, walnut, maple, lacewood, bubinga . . .
