As with any textured glass, the first place to try is the smoother side. For some of the glass, it’s still a crapshoot, so many people resort to diamond bandsaws, ring saws or the wet saw you stashed in the basement after that big tile project. There are also cutting systems like Mortons that people swear by.
The key, I’ve found, is practice. (And a good old ring saw when the piece has to be just right.)
The “pretty mess” of broken bits and pieces can add interest to your cabs or pendants. Heck, I got LOTS of pretty messes.
